I just started working on Towns for the Lower Realm and wanted to share some of my plans for them.
Progression
Towns will progress over time, there will be building/upgrades available to towns, towns will gather materials by trading with the player, other towns and by sending specific units on the map to gather needed materials, after the town gathers enough materials they will launch the upgrade. Over time towns will provide the player with more options and opportunities.
Trade
Towns will provide a way for the player to sell and buy items, as the town grow bigger better items will be available.
Diplomacy
Towns will wage war on each others, create alliances and trading between them, eventually a faction system will be implemented, this will provide opportunities to the player by working as a mercenary or by selling items needed during the war.
Quests
Towns will be the major source of quests, higher level towns will provide the player with better quests with higher rewards. There are also some buildings planned that will provide the player with more things to do and challenges, an example of this is a planned Adventurers Guild that will host NPC Adventures similar to the player that will compete for quests and rewards.
Player Made Towns
The player will also be able to found towns and manage them, this will be built on top of the player camp system, as the camp improves player will eventually be able to upgrade it to a full fledged town.
This are some of the features planned for the towns, there are more but before I start sharing my other ideas I want to implement this ones first, fell free to give me some feedback, I would love to hear from you!

An early look into battles
I just uploaded a small video showing the current state of battles, there are still some graphical glitches but the logic is working. Check it out bellow.
Loot drops are still missing has it's dependent on the items/inventory system that I'm currently working on, I'll post an update of how it's going in some days.

Current state of The Lower Realms
Currently The Lower Realm is in an early stage of development but some of the core system are already in place.
Procedural Terrain Generation
Currently the an early terrain generation system is already in place, the system is easily modifiable allowing for fast implementation of new tiles and terrain types.
There are 6 tile types in place at the moment, Water, Beach, Grassland, Forest, Highland and Mountain.
Player and Enemies
Tiles have different crossing costs, the path is calculated based on the fastest path to reach the selected destination. Player movement is fully functional.
Entities will spawn and roam the world, the player can defeat them for materials and XP. The basic Enemy AI is in place.
Battles
For the battles a classic turn based system is used where faster characters and enemies get more turns. The core logic of the system is done but the interface is still incomplete.
Artwork
For the artwork custom 64x64 sprites are being used since is all that my art skills allow. Bellow the current sprites used in the game. From top to bottom, entities, tiles and items.
Upcoming Features
Bellow are the main upcoming features on the short term, many more are planned but for now this are the ones with high priority

The Road Ahead
Currently i'm working on the items, inventory, equipment and crafting system while polishing and improving some of the existing features. Soon i'll post a video showcasing the current game state as it is will be easier to have a feeling of where the game is heading than with a simple blog post.
